🔨 Top-Down Pixel Art Paladin — Premium Class

A fully-animated top-down holy knight built around a two-handed warhammer — a 4-direction hammer combo — first hit, second hit, and the two joined — a holy magic cast in four facings with golden rings and crosses spiralling around him, and a shield cast in all four directions that slams the hammer down and sends a shield of light forward.

Both skills come apart into layers: every magic cast also ships without its effect, every shield cast ships as body and shield separately, and the effects themselves are in the pack as standalone clips — the holy ring in five colours and the conjured shield in both facings.

Part of "Tiny Questers — Complete Pixel RPG Asset Pack." Drop-in compatible with the free Warrior and every other class — same pivot rule, same 64×64 body, same animation workflow.

🛡️ 65 clips · 1,388 frames. Paladin (56) + standalone FX (9): the holy ring in
5 colours and the conjured shield.

Animation Set

  • Idle — 6 facings · down (faces the camera) / up (true back view) / left / right,
  •  plus two 3/4 diagonal poses (idle_down_left / idle_down_right) — 7–8 frames each. Left and right are drawn separately, not flipped.
  • Walk — down / up (8 frames) · left / right (10 frames)
  • Hit — 4 directions · down / up (7 frames) · left / right (8 frames): a jolt, a white flash, then he recovers straight into the matching idle
  • 💀 Die — two ways down
    • Collapse · die_down_left / die_down_right (17 frames, 64×64) —
    •  his eyes close, the hammer slips forward and he falls face-down beside it
    • Knock-back · die_flying_left / die_flying_right (14 frames, 128×64)
    • a heavy blow throws him 36 px backwards onto his back while the hammer flies out of his hands the other way
  • The knock-back also comes taken apart: _stay (the body, held in place) and
  •   _hammer_only (the flying hammer on its own). Move the body with your own physics, or turn the hammer into a loot drop or a weapon to pick back up —
  • the README has the per-frame offsets that rebuild the finished clip pixel for pixel.
  • 🏆 Win — victory pose, 16 frames on a 96×96 canvas, in both facings:
  • he hoists the warhammer and shakes it overhead. Play it once for a victory beat, or loop it on a results screen.
  • Attack — a 4-direction hammer combo, all on a 128×128 canvas:
    • First hit · attack_down / up / left / right (20–22 frames) — he hauls the hammer back and brings it round in a low sweeping arc, then keeps it cocked for a follow-up
    • Second hit · attack_*_second (14 frames) — picks up from that cocked pose, swings back the other way and settles the hammer on his shoulder
    • Combo · attack_*_combo (30 frames) — both hits in one clip
The first hit's last frames are the second hit's opening frames, pixel for pixel, so chaining them in code never pops — the README gives the one-line rule. Use the combo when you don't need the hits separately.

✨ Holy Magic — 4 facings

magic_down_left / magic_down_right / magic_up_left / magic_up_right — 35 / 35 / 34 / 34 frames on a 96×96 canvas. The hammer goes up, the paladin lights up in gold, and rings of light with cross-shaped sparkles spiral around him. Use it as a blessing, a heal, a buff or a holy-light spell — the four diagonals cover every facing, back views included, and the effect is drawn into the frames, so no extra particle work is needed.

No-FX versions of all four (magic_*_no_fx) — the identical casts with every effect switched off, frame for frame. Put your own spell effect on him, or…

…recolour the cast. The gold ring in fx/ is the exact effect of the cast, lifted off the caster. Spawn it — or any of its four recolours — on the no-FX cast at the offset given in the README (one line per facing) and you get the paladin casting in cyan, blue, green or red, with the ring landing exactly where the original has it. No editing needed.

🛡️ Shield Cast — 4 directions

cast_shield_down / up / left / right — 30 / 30 / 34 / 34 frames on a 128×128 canvas. The hammer comes down with a flash of impact, then a shield of light forms in front of him and flies forward — a barrier, a shield bash, a protective projectile.

It ships in three layers: the full cast, _no_fx (the paladin, his swing and the impact flash — no shield) and _fx_only (the shield alone). Same canvas, same alignment — stack the last two and you get the full cast back pixel for pixel (for the back view the shield goes behind him, as it forms on his far side). Give the shield its own sorting layer, tint, or collider.

💫 Standalone FX

  • Holy ring × 5 colours — gold, cyan, blue, green, red (96×96). The same 24 frames with identical silhouettes — only the palette changes — so you can key them to heal / buff / curse / element, or swap the sheet at runtime without touching the animation. Play it on the targets of the cast.
  • Conjured shield — left / right (21 frames) and down / up (23 frames — the shield's face and its back) on a 64×64 cell: it gathers from a few sparks into a full shield of light and holds. Drop it on an ally as a protect / barrier buff.

What's Inside

  • ✅ 65 animation clips · 1,388 hand-drawn frames — Paladin 56 (idle 6-way · walk 4-dir · hit 4-dir · die ×2 + knock-back die ×2 + in-place body ×2 + hammer-only ×2 · win ×2 · hammer attack 4-dir × first hit / second hit / combo · holy magic ×4 + no-FX ×4 · shield cast ×4 + no-FX ×4 + shield-only ×4) · FX 9 (holy ring ×5 colours · conjured shield ×4)
  • ✅ TWO timing versions — smooth/ (every frame, 75 ms) and classic/ (half the frames at 150 ms, same total length). Same art, same layout — pick what your project prefers.
  • ✅ PNG single frames + horizontal atlases, each with POT-padded copies (single_pot/, atlas_pot/). Frames are split per character (single/paladin/, single/fx/); sheets are named <character>_<clip>.png.
  • ✅ GIF previews (1× and 5×) for every clip in both timing folders — 220 GIFs total
  • ✅ One floor across three canvases — 64×64 body, 96×96 magic and win, 128×128 attacks and shield casts, 128×64 knock-back deaths. The bigger canvases are the 64×64 frame padded evenly (on every side, or left and right for the deaths), so a centre (or feet) pivot keeps him standing still when a clip switches size. The README gives the exact numbers.

✏️ Aseprite Source Edition

Want to edit the art itself? The Aseprite Source Edition adds the original, editable .aseprite file for all 63 clips on top of the full PNG/GIF set — fully layered, nothing flattened: cape, body, head, shoulders, hands and hammer on their own layers, and every effect above them. The no-FX and shield-only clips are the same layered files with different layers switched off, so you can switch them back on, recolour just the effect, or build your own variants.

Great For

Top-down & 2D RPGs · roguelikes · dungeon crawlers · tank, healer and support classes · class-change systems — a natural promotion for the Warrior · game jams · prototypes.

I love your animations, 6 pixel face and you managed to capture his emotions still.  His death is spectacular!
Seeing this inspired my royal jelly death animation.

Thank you! I’m glad his expressions came through with so few pixels 😊
